Never Allow Yourself to be Defined by Your Job Title

Whether you're a successful broker on Wall Street or an entry-level clerk at a local department store, always position yourself to be valued for your competencies and skills — not merely for your position within an organisation.
The world may know your job title; but in the unfortunate event that your tenure within that organisation comes to an end, for whatever reason, the real test will be found in your value proposition — those core skills and competencies that determine whether or not you can be considered an invaluable asset to ANY organisation.
When you become a person of value, you position yourself to access opportunities that would otherwise have been inaccessible.
So avoid expending too much energy on attaining titles and positions — those will eventually come your way. You must first focus on perfecting your skills and competencies within a particular area of expertise, to the extent that gate-keepers will no longer be able to ignore you.
